Postgraduate Diploma (PgD) in Business Management leading to MSc / MBA  

This programme is designed for graduates or experienced managers who wish to develop their career in management. The programme covers a wide range of contemporary issues and develops the critical, analytical and technical skills needed by senior management staff. The programme will also develop the academic skills required for further study at postgraduate level.

This qualification aims to enables candidates to develop their knowledge and skills in areas of business management. Candidates develop high level strategic awareness of key developments and issues through the study of a range of intellectually-challenging units relating to diverse management activities. This qualification encourages a proactive approach to the development and application of predictive, strategic, and innovative thinking which can be applied to the workplace to improve performance at both a professional and organisational level.

The difference between the MSc and the MBA is not the qualification but the student. The MBA will require students to have a more developed approach and practical experience of working as a Manager and the dissertation module will be more critical in nature.


Entry Requirements for the PgD
On entry a student must have at least one of the following:

 
An honours degree from a UK university (minimum 2:2) in any subject, or equivalent award from a non-UK university, OR
 
Three years' work experience at managerial level with significant responsibility for resources (staff, financial, physical etc, or a combination of these). Prospective students must be able to demonstrate that these responsibilities were significant and that they had a high level of autonomy.

Applicants whose first language is not English will need an IELTS score of 6.5 or equivalent.

Programme Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the programme you should be able to demonstrate:
 
The impact of contextual forces on organisations including legal systems; ethical, economic, environmental, social and technological change issues; international developments; corporate governance
 
Markets and customers; the development and operation of markets for resources, goods and services; expectations of customers and equivalent stakeholders, service and orientation
 
The concepts, processes and institutions in the production and marketing of goods and/or services; the management of resources and operations
 
The financing of the business enterprise or other forms of organisations: sources, uses and management of finance; use of accounting for managerial and financial reporting applications
 
The management and development of people within organisations: organisational theory, behaviour, industrial/employee relations, human resource management, change management
 
The development of appropriate business policies and strategies within a changing context to meet stakeholder interests.
  Programme Structure  
 
The programme is taught over 18 to 24 months. The PgD portion consists of two semesters of full time study plus revision time which takes one year. Students will study a minimum of four modules in each semester. On successful completion of the PgD, students can apply to the relevant university to obtain Masters by undertaking two further modules. This part normally takes between 6 months to 12 months to complete.

The qualification is designed to allow entry to and/or enhance progression in a wide range of management roles in the public, private or charitable sectors.

On successful completion of the PgD Business Management students can progress to either an MSc or an MBA in the Business Management subject area. The difference between the MSc and the MBA is not the qualification but the student. The MBA will require students to have a more developed approach and practical experience of working as a Manager and the dissertation module will be more critical in nature.
